The Safe Keeper

This was one of those rare moments where this was a discovery we made.

It happened sometime in July of 2009, when Andre and I (Owen) were doing some urbexing in Duskmoore’s sewer system. It was nothing serious, just a couple of guys exploring the stench trenches of our nothing burger of a town. We were going deeper into the tunnels, hoping to make our way to the underground facilities to see whatever’s down there, when we hit a fork. As we were discussing which way to go, we heard something weird. In the right tunnel, we heard the sound of two legs slowly trudging through the pungent sludge. The tunnels that were in front of us were pitch black, so as the sounds got closer, all we were able to make out was the faint outline of a figure in the dark.

Andre pointed his flashlight into the tunnel, which shined on our first ghost encounter. It appeared to be a large, emaciated human, almost skeletal in form. Its arms were bound like a straitjacket under bandages that wrapped around the torso. Its most defined feature was its head, or rather, what was covering it: an old, rusty bank safe. For that, we’ve referred to the figure as “Safe Keeper.” Moments after the flashlight hit it, muffled screams echoed underneath the metal plating of its “head” as it shambled toward us. We immediately turned back and escaped the sewers, making our way home soon after.

The first person we talked about our encounter to was Holly, then we reported it to the police. We didn’t tell them about Safe Keeper, most authorities in the town who know about us were already skeptical of our encounters and didn’t take us seriously. So, we kept the report vague, and we told them that we heard something weird in the sewer system and if they could check it out. A week later, we contacted them to see if they had found anything, and sure enough, they did. The station sent in a couple of officers to check the sewer system, and they came across Safe Keeper. Only, it wasn’t upright and walking, but lying dead and decaying, mostly submerged in the stinking stagnant water. That’s when we knew what we saw that day was a genuine ghost. Apparently when they brought the body to the forensics, they discovered a thing or two that relates to some kind of murder case that was left unsolved for decades, and it was because of us, the case was opened back up and is still being solved.
